Staff

Staff are the primary resource of a professional engineering practice. A dedicated core staff is maintained and they are supplemented by retained contract staff when required. Details about the principle staff members, along with their summary curriculum vitae, are given below.


Gordon A Morris, Principal

Establishment of MEDS as an engineering design consultancy in 1979. Responsible for all professional, technical and commercial matters relating to the operation of MEDS as a private professional consulting engineering practice. MEDS has been developed in to a full professional practice providing clients with a range of services in engineering design & development, building services and Expert witness work.

In carrying out projects for clients, a detailed working knowledge of various BS, DnV, API, ASME and IMO standards, IEE Wiring and Building Standards Regulations has been developed. He is responsible for the development of computer applications for:

  • Sub-sea pipeline stability analysis
  • FE Analysis post processor
  • Pumps and Pipe system operation assessments
  • Sub-sea pipeline cathodic protection systems
  • Data base systems for maintenance management
  • Catenery analysis
  • Budget Control Systems

and carries out programming in Visual Basic, Java and Clipper database systems.

He has also developed the firms management systems for CAD, drawing office and design management systems to meet the general needs of the firm and those of specific clients.

He lectured part-time at the University of Edinburgh to undergraduate and post-graduate architectural students on Building Services engineering for ten years and has acted as an expert witness on technical matters in cases of legal dispute. He is also an accredited mediator and a Director and Commissioner of the Scottish Council for International Arbitration.

He has been engaged and worked on projects in USA, South America, Germany, North Africa, Middle East, Holland, Sweden and Denmark.

During his career some 22 patents and registered designs have been filed where he is noted as the inventor.

Prior to establishing MEDS, Gordon was the Design and Production Manager of a semi-trailer manufacturing company. He was responsible for the design and production of custom built semi-trailers for the UK, European and Middle East markets. Trailer designs included low loaders up to 120 tonne capacity, TIR platforms, Refrigerated Box Vans, Curtain Sided platforms, petroleum spirit and chemical tankers. A full range of axles and suspension systems up to 75 tonne capacity were developed to allow the company to meet extreme operating conditions in the Middle East. Responsible for technical and commercial matters relating to customer liaison, a design team of 4 engineers and a workshop of 80. The company received the Queen's Award for Export.

Chris Whytock, Design Engineer

Chris served an engineering apprenticeship with Ferranti where he was subsequently employed as a toolmaker and general machinist. After deciding to further his career in engineering he returned to full time education as a mature student. He gained an honours degree in Engineering with Management from Napier University, Edinburgh. Since graduating he has developed his experience in various engineering related roles that included

  • Production Engineer in a precision sheetmetal & pcb manufacturing company
  • Project Engineer in a stainless steel fabrication company
  • Teaching Company Associate with Napier University

Since joining MEDS his projects have included the design, development and production of IC engined and battery powered vehicles. He has worked on the development of equipment and components for use in high-pressure liquid chromatography, casting design, pressure vessels for manufacturing processes, industrial cooling ventilation duct work, oil rig lifting sheaves and assisted in forensic examinations relating to corrosion, car tyre failures, drive couplings and heater failures.

Lorisa Redpath, Practice Administration

Prior to taking her degree, Lorisa trained as a book-keeper and clerical administrator. She has extensive experience of organising information libraries, desk top publishing and applications software. Responsible for the day to day administration and book-keeping functions, she also maintains the extensive Standards and technical literature library systems of the firm.
